School Re-Entry Program

Burn Care

After a child has been severely burned or has suffered a spinal cord injury he or she may stay in the hospital for weeks or even months. An extended hospital stay can make it challenging to go back into the community and school environment, especially if the child’s appearance and ability to function have changed significantly.

Shriners Hospitals for Children® has developed a comprehensive school re-entry program that helps prepare students and teachers for the return of the child, and helps ease the injured child’s transition back into daily life. The program includes:

  • a presentation to the teachers and classmates about the child’s injuries.
  • an overview of what happened to the child and he or she looks like now (with the family’s permission).
  • information for teachers and administrators about the child’s condition, helping him or her make a successful transition back to school, and tips for what to do in case a medical emergency or complication happens at school.
