Nutritional Evaluation and Assessment
Good nutrition is essential in your child’s recovery and their daily lives after they leave Shriners Hospitals for Children®. Based on your child’s specific condition, some may have mobility limitations, swallowing issues and other problems that can interfere with eating and getting the proper nutrition. Our nutrition evaluations and assessments are done to ensure that your child will be taking in the appropriate amount of calories and selecting foods that will promote overall good health.
Our dieticians evaluate your child’s condition and make recommendations based on their age, overall health and other factors to ensure proper nutrition and healthy eating.
In some cases a nutritional program may need to be in place for a month or two prior to a surgical procedure to ensure that your child is in optimal health. Our dietary team will work closely with you to design an eating plan that accommodates religious and regional preferences, the unique nutritional needs of your child, and any developmental or physical challenges that may make eating or swallowing difficult.
We’ll also provide appropriate recommendations when your child is discharged from the hospital or between clinic visits to help you maintain good health optimal nutrition at home.
