Shriners Hospitals for Children® — Erie opened in June of 1927 as the Zem Zem Hospital, completely run and financed by Zem Zem Shriners in Erie. At that time, the hospital’s primary focus was treating children with Polio. In later years, this focus extended to include most pediatric orthopedic conditions. In 1967, the hospital officially became part of Shriners Hospital system. Over the years, the Erie Shriners Hospital has treated tens of thousands of children with complex and simple orthopedic medical problems.
From 1997-2002, the hospital underwent a $22 million expansion and renovation program that totally transformed the facility. Our physicians, nurses, therapists, technicians and other trained specialists have hundreds of years of combined experience treating children who come to us for care.
In 2011, plans were approved to transition the Erie facility from an inpatient hospital to an ambulatory facility offering outpatient surgery, outpatient physical/occupational therapy and comprehensive medical care through the facility’s Outpatient Clinic. Providing quality orthopedic medical care to children is our top priority.
