Plan your visit

We realize your presence during your child’s stay at the hospital is very reassuring, so we encourage one parent/guardian to stay at the bedside. We provide a single cot, bed linens and shower facilities for the parent staying.

For other family members who would like to stay close to the hospital during your child’s stay your care coordinator can answer any questions you may have about housing and applicable discounts in the area surrounding Shriners Hospitals for Children – Northern California.

Cafeteria
Our cafeteria serves breakfast, lunch and dinner every day and is open to our patients and families. Snacks, beverages, sandwiches, salads and desserts are available throughout the day at reasonable prices.

To have a meal with your child you may purchase your meal in the cafeteria and bring it to your child’s room. If your child is able, you may bring your child with you to the cafeteria. Please let the nursing staff know if you are interested in doing this.

Parent Accommodations

Staying overnight at the hospital can ease your child's concerns. One adult family member may stay at the hospital during your child's stay. A chair bed may be placed in your child's room, or the adult may be assigned to a room in our 5th floor family accommodations. In certain situations, you may be asked to share your room with another parent.

Linens and towels are provided, but you must bring any other personal items for your own use. It is important to limit valuables brought to the hospital. The person rooming at the hospital must be in good health and able to care for him/herself.

Laundry Facilities

Family members staying at the hospital may use the laundry facilities located on the 5th floor near the Family Lounge.

Meals

Family members are asked to provide their own meals during the stay. Our family lounge is equipped with a refrigerator and a microwave for your use. The hospital café serves breakfast, lunch and dinner daily, including weekends. There are vending machines on the 5th floor near the family lounge and in the 2nd floor café.

Library Services

Books, movies (DVD), and general information are available in the family library, located on the 2nd floor near the school and adjacent to the central activity area. Patients and families are encouraged to visit the library, which is open daily. The collection includes books written in Spanish. To schedule an appointment with the hospital librarian, access resources or sign up for a time to use the Internet, please contact the hospital librarian at 916-453-2040.

Security

Hospital security provides on-site service 24-hours a day. The security staff will escort you to the parking garage upon request. If you have safety concerns or would like a security escort, please call the security guard at ext. 3000 or visit the main desk in the hospital lobby.

Transportation

The transportation coordinator in the care coordination department will work with the family, hospital social worker, and sponsoring Shrine Center to arrange transportation, as needed. The transportation coordinator may be reached at 916-453-2090.

You can find transportation services in your area by looking in the yellow pages of your local phone book under the heading “transportation.” You may be eligible for transportation through “Paratransit” if you are not able to use your community’s regular bus or rail service for some or all of your trips. You will need to fill out an application form and use a special pass. In some communities, Paratransit offers free mobility training to help persons with disabilities be more independent in using public transportation.
