At Shriners Hospitals for Children — Chicago, care is delivered in a family-centered environment, which means the patient and the family are the focus. In addition to medical care, we have the following support services.
Our play areas include the Ballreich patient activity mall, an outdoor accessible playground and an inpatient playroom.
Patients are scheduled for play as part of their daily routine. Structured and unstructured activities take place in the hospital every day. Therapeutic recreation and child life specialists supervise activities that include everything from wheelchair basketball to video games, to special performances by visiting groups or clubs.
There is an ATM located in the hospital’s main lobby.
There are computers available for Internet access in the patient activity mall. Free WIFI access is available.
Shriners Hospitals for Children — Chicago offers interpretive services for you and your child. It is vital to ensure that you have accurate information about your child’s care. We have Spanish interpreters onsite and use per diem interpreters and telephonic interpreter services for Spanish, Polish, as well as other languages.
Should you need to stay near our hospital or have a child staying overnight in the hospital, we have care coordinators to assist you with arrangements. We realize your presence during your child’s stay at the hospital is very reassuring, so we encourage one parent or guardian to stay at the bedside. We provide a single cot, bed linens and shower facilities for the parent staying.
For other family members who would like to stay close to the hospital, your care coordinator can answer any questions about housing and applicable discounts for area hotels or the Ronald McDonald House, located approximately 20 minutes from our Chicago location. The Ronald McDonald House provides a “home away from home” for families of children receiving treatment at our hospital. Please work with your care coordinator for assistance with reservations. Outgoing mail can be sent using the mailbox located at the entrance of the hospital. Arrangements can be made through the nursing/materials management department for mailing larger packages. All shipping costs are the responsibility of the parent/patient. Mail received after a patient is discharged will be forwarded to the home address of the patient.
Parking is accessible during your hospital stay and is available at no charge in the visitor parking lot in front of our hospital. The front desk has tokens to exit the parking lot.

Telephones are available in each patient room. These phones are restricted to incoming calls only. For the comfort of other patients, we request that all calls are made before 8 p.m. An exception may be made for calls outside the United States due to time zone differences. Charges for all calls made by patients/parents are the responsibility of the patient/parent.
