Shriners Hospitals for Children — Galveston is one of only four freestanding hospitals in the country dedicated to the treatment of pediatric burns and specializing in plastic and reconstructive surgery. Our physicians’ experience and expertise in burn treatment, cleft lip and palate, complex wound and skin conditions, and plastic and reconstructive surgery makes Shriners Hospitals for Children — Galveston a first choice for care.
During your child's stay, we will do our best to help tour family in every way. Our goal is to treat your child and help the family adjust to the stress caused by the injury. Because children need love and emotional support from parents and families, we practice a family-centered approach to care.
We believe that all patients and families who come to this hospital have certain basic needs, including the need for information, emotional support and respect. We recognize that children need the love and emotional support of parents and family during the stressful time of being in the hospital. In recognition of all of these needs, we foster an environment that keeps parents and families close to the child and actively involved in meeting the individual needs of the child. The health care team and family develop a plan of care to meet the child's physical, emotional and developmental needs while in the hospital and anticipate the family's needs in continuing the child's care at home.
Outpatient services provide follow-up care for acute care, plastic surgery and reconstructive surgery patients. Children with localized burn injuries, complications from scarring and certain congenital disorders are evaluated in the outpatient department. Our physicians, nurses, rehabilitation therapists and care managers work together to carefully evaluate the child’s condition, manage theirprogress and develop a care plan that provides the best possible outcome.
Telemedicine – or telehealth – gives our patients access to specialty care without traveling to Galveston, using interactive video conferencing between the medical team at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Galveston and the patient/family in their own community.
Patients come to Shriners Hospitals for Children — Galveston from various and far-reaching locations to receive care for a variety of conditions. But once they return home, it can be difficult for physicians to provide follow-up care. The telemedicine program allows our physicians, nurses and therapists to easily see how a patient is progressing without the patient and their family needing to travel and take time away from home, school and work. Time is saved, costs are streamlined and patients and families experience improved health care quality and accessibility.
Staff members at the telemedicine site have the same equipment as their counterparts in Cincinnati. This allows patients and physicians to communicate in a live, two-way interactive videoconference. Patients are able to see and talk with the physician directly through the TV. The private information travels directly along phone lines, making it more secure and dependable than the Internet.
Through telemedicine, Shriners Hospitals for Children — Galveston has allowed us to provide care for children who live beyond our state and international borders
