About us

Shriners Hospitals for Children — Salt Lake City is a highly specialized orthopaedic hospital located in the Greater Avenues neighborhood of the city. Affiliated with the University of Utah Orthopaedic Group, Shriners Hospitals for Children — Salt Lake City is able to provide comprehensive orthopaedic care in a family-centered environment.

Our history

Our model for care was imagined and established by the Shriners, the fraternal organization for which the hospital is named. Determined to give all children access to specialized care, the Shriners opened their first hospital in 1922. At the time, polio was reaching epidemic proportions and only families of means had ready access to doctors, leaving thousands of children at risk. Shriners Hospitals for Children opened as a place where children with the crippling effects of polio, clubfoot and other orthopaedic conditions could receive life-changing medical care.

Recognized as one of the world’s greatest philanthropies, Shriners Hospitals for Children has evolved into an international hospital system recognized for its devotion to transforming the lives of children through expert care and research. It is a destination of choice for parents whose children have orthopaedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries, cleft lip and/or palate, or other complex surgical needs. Care is funded in part through insurance providers (including Medicare and Medicaid), but primarily by the Shriners Hospitals for Children endowment, which is sustained by donations. All children receive care regardless of the families’ ability to pay.

A center of medical excellence

Shriners Hospitals for Children — Salt Lake City first started as a wing in St. Mark’s hospital in 1925. In 1951, a gift of federal land was awarded to the first Shriners Hospital built in Salt Lake City and its service area grew to span the entire Intermountain West. In 1995, the current hospital opened its doors next door to its previous location, and the hospital’s parking lot rests where the former hospital once was. Now, nestled in the quiet of the Greater Avenues neighborhood, the hospital is a short five-minute drive from the center of downtown Salt Lake City.

Today, the Salt Lake City Shriners Hospital is a 40-bed specialty hospital, with comprehensive in-house orthopaedic services provided by the wheelchair and seating department, therapy servicesmotion analysis center and Pediatric Orthotic and Prosthetics Services – West, LLC. Having so many resources under one roof is a great convenience for our patients and their families.

Our commitment to the community

Shriners Hospitals for Children — Salt Lake City, like the other U.S. based hospitals in the Shriners Hospitals for Children health care system, reaffirms its commitment to excellence of care through the development of its Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA). The CHNA is a requirement for tax-exempt hospitals to engage their servicing community every three years and assess their health needs. Based on the findings, we have developed an action plan to work alongside community stakeholders to address the health needs of the community.
