O. Berk Usta, Ph.D.

O. Berk Usta, Ph.D., is the director of research public relations affairs, the function of which is to highlight the work of Shriners Hospitals for Children — Boston research faculty and their research accomplishments through collaboration with the Shriners Hospitals for Children public relations department. He also co-directs day-to-day operations of two research shared facilities: Imaging and Morphology Facility and Research Computer Facility.

On the research front, Dr. Usta’s group primarily focuses on in vitro microscopic models of tissues, as well as stem cell therapies for disease. Two promising research programs are neutrophil and red blood cell preservation studies in wound healing and burn injuries which can directly impact the cell transplantation studies for burn patients whose neutrophils are impaired; and use of encapsulated mesenchymal stem cells for resolution of immune and inflammatory responses in juvenile and adult arthritic conditions. Both of these research programs, if successful, are expected to make clinical impact in about a decade.

Dr. Usta has published over 30 articles in journals of a wide spectrum of disciplines. His research has been funded by both individual and team grants from Shriners Hospitals, NIH and MGH-ECOR. He currently serves as the PI of one NIH R21 grant and a co-I on an R01 and P41 grants.

Dr. Usta currently serves as the associate executive editor of the journal Technology and also serves as an ad hoc reviewer for many journals. He serves on many review panels, including those of the European Commission and the NIH.
