Annual summer tradition boosts spirits with holiday cheer

The calendar says October here in Boston but the temperatures have us still thinking of summer and the great events that happened here this year. The patients at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Boston are so special, they deserve to celebrate the holidays twice a year!

Every summer, in partnership with the Boston Fire Fighters Burn Foundation, Santa Claus, Mrs. Claus and their helpers come to visit patients in July and bring them some holiday cheer. With his sleigh in the shop for a pre-Christmas tune-up, Santa borrows a ladder truck from the Boston Fire Department. After driving down Blossom Street and traveling up in the bucket to wave to patients in the upper floor windows of the hospital, Santa and his crew head indoors to hand out presents.

Getting an unexpected gift can change a child’s perception of what being in the hospital is like. Hillary Smith, senior child life specialist at the Boston Shriners Hospital, tells us more about how programs like the annual Christmas in July can impact the lives of our patients all year long.
