Boston Shriners Hospital honors Mrs. Ida Golden, the “Golden Lady”

Shriners Hospitals for Children — Boston honored Ida Golden and the Golden family at a recent reception.

Ida Golden was a teacher in the Revere Public Schools for more than 45 years. In addition to her job and raising her family, Mrs. Golden spent over 15,000 hours as a volunteer at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Boston. During her time as a volunteer, Mrs. Golden was the sole scribe of the hospital’s Gold Book – a recognition program for larger gifts made to the hospital. The Gold Books that Mrs. Golden inscribed still exist today.

Mrs. Golden received the Robert Gardner Wilson, Jr. Award, the highest award within the Aleppo Shriners, bestowed to those who go above and beyond the call of duty. Shriners International founded Shriners Hospitals for Children as its official philanthropy in 1922.

Mrs. Golden has since passed away, but her family continues her legacy of service. Her son, Mr. Leon Golden, a member of Aleppo Shrine Center, chairs and organizes the Aleppo Red Can Drive. This is an enormous undertaking that includes recruiting and training volunteers, scheduling canning shifts, educating the volunteers about the hospital, and forming and maintaining relationships with the many area grocery stores where Aleppo canners are allowed to collect funds.

When the program began in 2008, Mr. Golden and his volunteers raised $17,462. Last year, the group raised $156,000. To date, the canning program has raised more than $1.12 million for the Aleppo Transportation Fund. The money is used to bring patients to Shriners Hospitals for Children — Boston for care.

The Boston Shriners Hospital staff and members of the Golden family gathered to unveil a plaque in the hospital lobby to honor Ida Golden and thank the entire Golden family for their continued dedication to the hospital and its patients.
