Meet Brando, Boston's standard bearer for the upcoming Shriners Hospitals for Children Open

Each year, the 22 Shriners Hospitals for Children select patient ambassadors to serve as standard bearers at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in Las Vegas, Nevada. This year, the Boston Shriners Hospital has selected 16-year-old Brandon, known as Brando around our hospital. Throughout the tournament, Brando and the other standard bearers will assist with carrying the scores of professional golfers as they compete along the course. It is a rare “inside the ropes” opportunity at a PGA event, as well as the chance to share how Shriners Hospitals have helped transform the patients’ lives.

At just 7 months old, Brando was injured in a house fire, receiving burns to over 50 percent of his body. He and his mother Suzana traveled to the Boston Shriners Hospital from their home in Guatemala when Brando was 2. He has been a patient ever since, undergoing surgeries every year to reduce scarring and improve functionality. In the upcoming year, Brando will have reconstructive and laser surgeries on his hand and face.

Brando is a high school junior who loves photography and has a passion for science, especially chemistry. He loves sports and has played soccer from a young age. He is a member of the high school soccer team.  As a dedicated  Shriners Hospitals for Children patient ambassador, Brando has represented the Boston Shriners Hospital at the Aleppo Shriners Football Cassic and attended burn camps for the past eight years. In 2016 he was named Camper of the Year at the Arthur C. Luf Children’s Burn Camp.

Brando aspires to travel around the world sharing his story in the hopes of inspiring and empowering kids like him. He would love to create a foundation to raise money and give back to Shriners Hospitals for Children and support other kids, just as he has been helped.

We are wishing Brando and all the standard bearers a GREAT time in Las Vegas. We are so proud to have them representing all our patients.
