Shriners Hospitals for Children — Chicago has an extensive cerebral palsy program comprised of physicians, nurses; physical, occupational and speech therapists; social worker care managers and RN care managers. Our pediatric specialists offer a combined 75 years of expertise in caring for the child with mild to complex cases of cerebral palsy.

Treatment for cerebral palsy, including spasticity, varies depending on the severity of the disorder. Our pediatric specialists prescribe customized care plans for children with cerebral palsy.

Cerebral palsy treatment may include:

  • An evaluation of muscle function and gait in the motion analysis center
  • A therapy program to help the child develop functional skills, and maintain joint flexibility and body alignment
  • An evaluation by a physical medicine and rehabilitation physician
  • Medical management of spasticity orthoses (braces) or splints to properly position parts of the body and keep joints in alignment
  • Equipment evaluations for wheelchairs, and adaptive or bath equipment needs
  • Surgery to correct contractures and bone alignment, or release tight muscles or tendons
  • Tone management clinic
  • Specialty orthopaedic clinic referrals

On-site support services for cerebral palsy include:

  • Pediatric rehabilitation services, including occupational and physical therapists, and speech language pathologists
  • Aqua-therapy pool
  • Lokomat (robotic-assisted treadmill training)
  • ARMEO (upper extremity robotic training)
  • Functional electrical stimulation machines for upper and lower extremities
