Chicago Shriners Hospital staff try to “step” to Hawaii Shriners Hospital during chilly Chicago February

Each year when cold Chicago February days come around, the pediatric rehabilitation team at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Chicago tries to ward off the winter blahs by offering a fun challenge for staff. This year our Chicago children’s hospital staff were trying to “walk” all the way to our sister hospital in Honolulu, Hawaii. All month long, staff were the ‘walk’ to the 22 other Shriners Hospitals for Children locations, hoping to reach Honolulu by February 28! Staff tracked their steps on iPhones, Fitbits and other apps, and recorded them in a central database.

We're happy to say Aloha, and celebrate the 11 million steps and over 5,500 miles walked by the Chicago staff! Our hospital hosted a kid-friendly tropical celebration in the Patient Activity Mall on March 1.

The team was hoping to walk 4,369 miles…the distance between the Chicago Shriners Hospital and the Honolulu Shriners Hospital. Last year they made it all the way to Shriners Hospitals for Children — Portland. This year, by expanding the challenge to all hospital staff, the walkers made it to 21 locations by mid-month. Before reaching Shriners Honolulu and beyond by February 28.

Although the virtual walk won’t bring the Chicago staff to the sunny climate experienced by our Hawaiian Shriners Hospital colleagues, it went a long way toward making the cold days of February a little brighter around the Chicago hospital and added to the health/wellness of our team.
