Child Life team celebrates Dr. Seuss’s birthday and Child Life Month

The Cat in the Hat and Thing One and Thing Two...Just some of the fun guests who came to...our special reading event honoring Dr. Seuss! The Chicago Shriners Hospital marked Dr. Seuss’s birthday, which also is appropriately National Read Across America Day, and Child Life Month, with a special storytime in our hospital main lobby. Several patients and local media helped make the event special.

Friday, March 2 ,would have been Dr. Seuss’ 113th birthday. Theodor Seuss Geisel (born March 2, 1904, died 1991) is known by his pen name Dr. Seuss. He published over 60 books. The creative cartoonist and writer is still enjoyed by children today.

Child Life Specialists Allison Goldstein and Rachael Lange from Shriners Hospitals for Children — Chicago read from Dr. Seuss books. There were also Dr. Seuss coloring pages to decorate, and stuffed animal giveaways for patients who attended.

In addition to celebrating the beloved author, the Dr. Seuss storytime also helped kick off Child Life Month, which occurs annually in the month of March. Child life specialists provide therapy to reduce the stresses associated with staying in the hospital and help teach patients coping skills through offering opportunities to play, learn and interact with others in an emotionally and socially safe environment. Services include procedural support, pain management techniques, group activities and education, including medical play about upcoming procedures, operations or hospital visits.

Staff from around the Chicago Shriners Hospital helped celebrate as well. Many employees dressed up in colorful costumes or hats and posed for a group photo in our patient activity mall.
