Patient with scoliosis says thank you

Matt was diagnosed with scoliosis (curvature of the spine) as a child. A chiropractor, who is also a Shriner, referred him to our pediatric spine surgeons for treatment at age 8. Matt has undergone two spine surgery procedures, including a spinal fusion and follow-up care with Kim Hammerberg, M.D. During his time at the Chicago Shriners Hospital, Matt’s spine curves have changed significantly. The thoracic curve in his upper spine went from 74 degrees to a 38-degree curve. His lower back lumbar curve went from 45 to 22 degrees.

“I can’t thank everyone, the staff and doctors, enough. You can’t ask for better care than I received at Shriners Hospitals,” said Matt, who recently expressed his appreciation on Facebook about his final visit to our pediatric hospital in Chicago. Now 20, he is pursuing his college degree and working. He is also active in local politics in his community. “I will always hold a special place in my heart for the place that gave me hope when there was none.”
