Virtual visits expanded at Chicago Shriners Hospital during COVID-19

As we follow public health guidance during the pandemic, the Chicago Shriners Hospital has expanded the care model of its telehealth program to provide specialized care to eligible patients at their home using video visits. The program, called Fast Track Video Visits, allows physicians and clinicians to connect with patients and their parent or guardian over live video. During the appointment staff members will conduct a clinic visit and discuss treatment plans. Families need to have a smartphone, tablet, or computer with webcam to use for their child's appointment. (See the Family information guide below for instructions.)

To request a Fast Track Video Visit through telehealth: Call the hospital just like you would when setting up a regular appointment, and indicate that you would like to schedule a virtual visit. Please note: Not all patients will be eligible for telehealth visits.

  • New patients call 773-385-KIDS (5437)
  • Returning patients call clinic scheduling at 773-385-5410

How does it work?
Shriners Hospitals will schedule an appointment through an application called Skype for Business. You will receive a required consent form and meeting invite through email. Please note: Providing an email address means you agree to receive communications via email from Shriners Hospitals for Children.

Preparing for my child’s appointment

Sign and return the electronic consent. Select one device you will use during the appointment. The device must have access to email with the appointment invite and a camera. Install Skype for Business ahead of time.

How to install Skype for Business:

  • Smartphone/tablet:
Make sure your device has the latest software updates from Apple or Google. Install free Skype for Business app from App Store or Google Play Store. “Allow” the series of permissions and “Accept” terms of use. Reboot your phone after downloading!
  • Laptop/desktop with webcam:
Open the Shriners Hospitals email invite and click the blue "Join Skype Meeting" link. Select “Open Skype Meetings App” or “Install and Join with Skype Meetings App (web).” Select "Run" to install.
  • Mac computer:
Open the Shriners Hospitals email invite and click "Try Skype Web App." Click "Download" and "Install Skype for Business." “Allow” the download. From your downloads, double left click on Skype for Business. Agree to licensing terms and follow install process.

Do you need additional help installing? Visit the "Download Skype" page and choose the device type you will be using.

Do you have additional questions on Skype for Business, or audio or video issues in advance? Call 773-622-5400 and ask to speak to your physician’s nurse.
