Shriners Hospitals for Children — Chicago demonstrates a strong commitment to quality care and excellence in patient experience. The Chicago Shriners Hospital received the Press Ganey Guardian of Excellence Award for patient experience in inpatient pediatric care in 2015 and 2018. This award is given to hospitals scoring at or above the 95th percentile as compared to other pediatric hospitals in the nation, for a one year period. Patient satisfaction scores in both the inpatient and outpatient areas have consistently been at or above 93 percent over the last four years. Our overall percentile score compared to other pediatric hospitals in the area is at or above 97 percent.

Shriners Hospitals for Children — Chicago has been awarded a 2018 Top Workplaces honor by the Chicago Tribune. This is based solely on employee feedback gathered through a third-party survey administered by their research partner Energage, LLC, a leading provider of technology-based employee engagement tools. The anonymous survey measures several aspects of workplace culture, including alignment, execution and connection.

The Chicago Shriners Hospital received the National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators Award for outstanding nursing quality in a pediatric hospital in both 2011 and 2013, based on 17 measures to rate overall quality of nursing care.

The number of readmissions to our hospital has decreased steadily over the years to one of the lowest in the state. There has been a downward trend in adverse medication events, due in part to safety practices in place, such as bar coding, use of an electronic medical record and monitoring of near miss situations to correct a potential safety issue before it occurs. The Chicago Shriners Hospital also continues to sustain a rate of zero in pressure ulcers acquired during hospitalization.

Infection prevention and control is paramount to any hospital. Proper hand hygiene is the number one way to prevent infection. Our hand hygiene compliance rates are consistently measured between 94–96 percent. At the Chicago Shriners Hospital our health care associated infections are remarkably low. Our hospital sustained a rate of zero for central line infections and ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP) events since 2013 in our critically ill patients, and a rate of 0.5 percent for surgical site infections (SSI) in 2018. Despite the fact that many of our patients are admitted with multiple drug resistant organisms (MDROs), we have successfully sustained a rate of zero for cross contamination in our inpatient units.

Shriners Hospitals for Children — Chicago noted that scoliosis screening was no longer mandatory in schools. Three to five children out of 1,000 will develop scoliotic curves large enough to warrant treatment. The Scoliosis Research Society and the American Academy of Pediatrics published a position statement advocating for screening of school children. As part of our Community Health Needs Assessment we developed an action plan that included educating other health care professionals on early detection and treatment of scoliosis. This was done through education of school nurses, general pediatricians and county health departments. Posters and educational aids were developed and continue to be distributed to schools and health care providers as part of outreach efforts.

Shriners Hospitals for Children — Chicago has been a member of the Great Lakes Hospital Improvement Innovation Network (HIIN) for several years. This is a collaboration between the Illinois Hospital Association, Michigan Hospital Association and Wisconsin Hospital Association under a contract with the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). The purpose of the HIIN is to provide a venue for hospitals to accelerate improvement efforts and commit to eliminating harm using the application of high-reliability principles to reduce harm to patients.

Shriners Hospitals for Children — Chicago is fully accredited by The Joint Commission for both the hospital and laboratory programs.
