We offer a dental service to current patients of Shriners Hospitals for Children — Honolulu. In an effort to achieve best clinical outcomes, the focus of this program is to promote healthy oral care for our patients in preparation for their orthopaedic procedure at the Honolulu Shriners Hospital.
The need arose for a dental clinic at the hospital when physicians noticed that the children who came for treatment often had poor to no oral health care. This was a major concern for physicians during patient evaluations as they feared that possible mouth infections would spread to surgery sites. It became vital to create the dental clinic to address patients that had both oral health care and orthopaedic surgery needs, so they could receive their treatment in one location.
The hospital also offers a dental under sedation program for our patients. The Honolulu Shriners Hospital is the first hospital in the Shriners Hospital health care system to have a dental clinic and the first hospital in Hawaii to have a pediatric dental under sedation program. Patients are treated under general anesthesia in the safe environment of the hospital’s operating room department. The care for these patients is provided through an affiliation between Shriners Hospitals for Children — Honolulu, which provides the operating room and general anesthesia service, and the NYU Lutheran Medical Center, which provides pediatric dentists and resident-in-training.
