Sibling plays special role in support system for patient with arthrogryposis

Four-year-old Alice and her twin brother, Abe, steal the hearts of those they meet. Whether hugging her after she learns to ride a bike, holding her hand as she walks on the beach or tagging along in the rehabilitation gym as she receives physical therapy, it is clear that Alice has a special support system.

Born with arthrogryposis multiplex congenita (AMC) – a disorder causing stiff joints and abnormal development of muscles – she has also had the support of the Shriners Hospitals for Children health care system since she was just 2 months old. After a hip surgery at the Philadelphia Shriners Hospital, Alice has received weekly physical therapy sessions here in Greenville. She has also been fitted in-house for leg braces that have aided her in meeting milestones and reaching goals.

“The care that Alice has received has enabled her to ride a bike, walk and engage in so many more activities than we ever thought possible for her,” said her mother, Christina.

To Alice’s parents, who were told she would never walk when she was born, the Greenville Shriners Hospital has been a place of hope and healing.

“The therapy staff and medical team are outstanding in their compassionate treatment for her,” said Christina. “They go out of their way to help her be all that she can be.”

With the support of her family and the Greenville Shriners Hospital staff, Alice will continue to grow and thrive in new and exciting ways. One thing is for sure, we can’t wait to continue to be a part of the adventures of Alice and Abe.
