Ketogenic diet

The ketogenic diet program is a high fat, moderate protein and low carbohydrate diet. It is a diet that is medically supervised by a physician and dietitian trained in ketogenic therapies. The diet eliminates foods such as sweets, breads and starches, noodles/pastas, cereal and milk. It is high in healthy fats such as coconut oil, butter, cream, olive oil and avocado.

Ketogenic diet uses

The ketogenic diet has been in use since the 1920s to treat seizure disorders. It has been used successfully in adults to help with weight loss. It may be helpful in other conditions such as autism.

How the diet works

Because the diet is high in fat and low in carbohydrates, the body changes the way it uses energy. Instead of primarily using glucose for energy, it switches to an alternative fuel called ketones, which are produced from fat. Though researchers do not fully understand why this seems to improve seizures, it is clear that it is effective as an alternative when medications have failed.
