Goals for recreation therapy

  • Ease the fear that can sometimes be associated with hospitalization
  • Increase strength, endurance and overall functioning
  • Improve confidence and self esteem
  • Improve socialization to build relationships and form support for one another
  • Improve overall independence

“Make ‘Em Smile” music program

  • Local musicians visit patient rooms and share their aloha and musical talents with our patients at bedside or in a group setting.
  • Musicians have included: Jason Alan, Tahiti Rey, Aaron Domingo, Tiger Lily and Roman DeParalta to name a few.

Pet therapy

Myah, our black labrador, plays ball, hide-n-seek and other games for fun and comfort.

Creative arts

We love to paint, draw, work with clay and have art exhibits to showcase the children’s artwork.

  • Art for Life program provides us with adorable ceramic pieces to paint.
  • Honolulu Art Museum – Art to Go provides us with talented artists that teach specific techniques.
  • Come sew your own pillow and much more!

Cultural programs

  • Patients have learned hula and ukulele and performed for May Day and other special events.
  • We have weekly cooking groups and have made food from Samoa, Fiji, Guam and other cultures.

Aquatic therapy

We have a heated therapy pool for general conditioning, relaxation and fun.

Healing touch

We believe in the mind-body connection. We have experienced healers who specialize in healing touch and Reiki to aid in reducing pain, healing and relaxation.

Special events

We go all out to celebrate holidays and patients' birthdays with music, games, activities and food. We have welcomed celebrity visitors that have included Shaquille O’Neal, the cast of Hawaii Five-O, Glee star Naya Rivera, hip-hop artist Big Sean, Jake Shimabukuro and Raiatea Helm, to name a few.

Community involvement

We have strong relationships with various community organizations that plan events and activities for our children.

Outdoor programs

We have an outdoor pavilion for games, adapted cycling, basketball, barbeques and playing bubbles.

Teen fun

Playing pool is an all-time favorite among our teens. We also have Nintendo Wii, ping-pong, air hockey and foosball.

Bedside activities

Providing opportunities such as DVD check-outs, crafts, games, volunteer visits, books from our library and other play activities.
