Support services

At Shriners Hospitals for Children — Houston, care is delivered in a family-centered environment, which means the patient and their family are the focus. In addition to medical care, we have the following support services.

School services

School services are available for school-aged children who will be hospitalized for two weeks or longer during the school year. Contact our school services department at 713-793-3813 or via email.

Recreation areas

There are several recreation areas and playrooms available to patients and families, including the outpatient clinic lobby on the fifth floor that has an outdoor playground. The child life game rooms and the inpatient game room are on the seventh floor. These areas are equipped with toys, board games, video games and puzzles for a variety of ages and developmental stages. There is a large, open play area on the sixth floor in the central activities area complete with basketball goals, a ping-pong table and other sporting equipment where kids and families can enjoy more outdoor-type sports inside the comfort of the hospital. Volunteers and staff from our child life department facilitate daily activities throughout the hospital.

Internet access/computer use

A computer with Internet access is located on the eighth floor by our patient housing. WiFi access is also available using our PFA network.

Dining services

Our cafeteria serves breakfast, lunch and dinner every day and is open to our patients and families. Snacks, beverages, sandwiches, salads and desserts are available throughout the day at reasonable prices. See our Food services page for more information.

Central activity area

Patients are scheduled for play as part of their daily routine. Structured and unstructured activities take place in the hospital’s central activity area. Recreational therapists supervise activities that include everything from cards and video games to special performances by local performing groups.

Interpreter services

Shriners Hospitals for Children — Houston offers interpretive services for you and your child as it is vital to ensure that you have accurate information about your child’s care. We have Spanish interpreters on site. If you need a translator, please contact the care management department.

Hospital transportation

Shriners volunteers often provide transportation to and from the hospital. The volunteers provide rides to and from bus terminals, train stations and the airport. To arrange for a pick-up or drop-off, call the care management department at 713-793-3757. Advance notice is necessary to access this service, therefore please make your transportation arrangements at least two weeks before your need.

Parking

Parking is free, secured and available at the hospital building.

Security

The security team at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Houston provides on-site service 24 hours a day. The security staff will escort you to the parking lot upon request. If you have safety concerns or would like a security escort, please call the security guard at 713-793-3728, or visit the main desk in the hospital lobby during regular business hours. After 4 p.m., Monday through Friday and on weekends, the security guard will be at the security desk at the back entrance of the hospital.
