Appointment planning during the COVID-19 pandemic

These are challenging times for us at Shriners Hospitals for Children Medical Center. At the beginning of this pandemic in March, we were open to urgent/emergent visits only. Now, we are slowly opening our schedule to include routine in-person visits; however, at this time, we are unable to return to pre-pandemic clinic volumes. This basically means that we cannot see as many patients in one day as we used to, which in turn, means that rescheduling your patient’s routine visit may take longer than you would like (or we would like!). And we may not be able to return to having that number of appointments in one day for a long time.

Our team is meeting frequently to plan and evaluate how best to continue providing outstanding care while keeping our patients, families and staff safe from COVID-19. Our plans may have to change based on government recommendations and what the virus is doing in the community. Part of those plans is exploring alternatives to in-person care that will still meet the needs of our patients. We ask for your patience and understanding as this pandemic unfolds.

In order to help us best care for our patients who need that care most urgently, we are asking you to partner with us and be patient with us. Here are some things to consider:

  • For all patients and families who are medically stable and have an upcoming routine appointment, please contact your care manager to discuss alternatives.
  • Some alternative options are telehealth visits, phone calls with a physician/physician assistant, and assistance from local care providers.
  • Our care managers are available to speak with you if you are unsure about your child's condition, or if you prefer an alternative treatment plan due to health concerns during this pandemic.

For those patients who do come to our facility, your experience will look different from pre-pandemic visits. Please find below our current processes to ensure patient, family and staff safety:

  • Do not arrive to the entrance of the facility any earlier than 15 minutes prior to your appointment time. If early, please stay in your car.
  • We are allowing only one adult to accompany the patient into our facility.
  • You are required to wear a mask. If you do not have one, we can provide one.
  • Upon entering our facility, you will be screened for specific symptoms of COVID-19 and your temperature will be taken.
  • We have removed a lot of the waiting room furniture in order to allow social distancing. If our facility reaches capacity, you may be asked to wait in your vehicle until we have available space.

Please be sure to check this website regularly and visit our Facebook, Instagram and Twitter pages to stay up-to-date on our current operating plan as we navigate through this ever-changing time. We sincerely apologize for any interruption of your child’s care, and want to assure you that we remain deeply committed to providing you expert care.

We look forward to a time when we can remove our masks and see your smiling faces again!
