At Shriners Hospitals for Children — Twin Cities, volunteers are an invaluable part of our philosophy for care. Whether it’s working behind the scenes or interacting with patients, families and staff, every volunteer position is important and provides a genuine service to our hospital and patients. As a volunteer for our hospital, you will discover a wealth of benefits, including:

Volunteer requirements

To protect the health and safety of our patients and families, it is imperative for our hospital volunteers to meet certain requirements. All hospital volunteers must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Commit to a minimum of one, two-hour shift per week for no less than six months
  • Be able to provide written documentation, from a health care provider, of up-to-date vaccinations including varicella (chicken pox) and other infectious diseases
  • Be able to provide written documentation, from a health care provider, of a negative Mantoux (Tuberculosis) test within the past 12 months or pass a Mantoux test provided by Shriners
  • Submit to a complete background check, including references, criminal records and child abuse history
  • Pass a drug screening test
  • Attend a comprehensive orientation prior to beginning your volunteer position

Hospital volunteers

Hospitals for Children — Twin Cities is a specialized hospital offering volunteer positions in physical therapy, occupational therapy, orthotics and prosthetics, and our child life departments. Volunteer placement is based on matching your abilities, interests and availability with the needs of our hospital. Volunteer shifts run Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. We cannot guarantee open positions all the time, but we work hard to align your talents and interests with your volunteer position to ensure a meaningful volunteer experience.

Groups sometimes provide one-time activity sessions for our inpatients or in our hospital clinic. If you are a group looking to volunteer, please contact our volunteer coordinator whose information may be found at the bottom of this page.

Apply to volunteer

If you are interested in applying to become a volunteer you may download a Volunteer Application. Applications may be printed, completed legibly by hand and mailed, or completed on the computer and e-mailed to the volunteer coordinator listed on the application.

If an appropriate volunteer position is available you will be contacted for a phone interview. If no appropriate openings are available when your application is received we will keep your application on file for three months.
