Shriners Hospitals spine surgeons improving the quality of care for scoliosis and spine patients

Shriners Hospitals for Children are known worldwide for providing the highest quality of care. To maintain this level of care requires a commitment to lifelong learning by those who render it. Recently, 15 spine surgeons and physicians from the Shriners Hospitals for Children hospital system gathered at our Chicago Shriners Hospital to share their knowledge and discuss ways to improve care for early onset scoliosis.

Organizers say they created the gathering because they realized the Shriners Hospital system is unique in providing care for so many children with early onset scoliosis. Specific topics of the August 2017 event included infantile casting, use of magnetic growing rods, spine growth modulation, Vitamin D impact on scoliosis, scoliosis specific exercises, and bracing, along with case presentations. Additionally, the physicians held discussion on developing a Shriners Hospitals database of scoliosis cases to improve the research and care for kids with this disorder across the country.

“This meeting of experts in a field which Shriners Hospitals have excelled at for many years demonstrates not only the individual commitment of the surgeon but the institutional commitment to strive for the highest quality of care. It is through this sharing of information that new techniques and improved outcomes are discovered and implemented,” Mark Niederpruem, hospital administrator at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Chicago said. “All this leads to better patient care which is what our hospital mission is all about.”
