Maleah,15, from Pleasant Grove, Utah and a patient at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Salt Lake City, will have the experience of a lifetime in November when she represents Shriners Hospital at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, an official PGA TOUR event in Las Vegas.
Maleah was chosen as one of 22 patient ambassadors throughout the country to represent the hospital network at the tournament, where she will serve as a standard bearer throughout the weekend, carrying the scores of professional golfers as they compete in the tournament. It is a rare “inside the ropes” opportunity at a PGA TOUR event, as well as the chance to share how Shriners Hospitals have helped transform her life.
Maleah has been a Shriners Hospital patient since 2002 when she was just a baby. She’s had one major surgery, followed by regular visits to the Pediatric Orthotic and Prosthetic Services – West, LLC department where she is fitted every year for a new prosthetic leg. Thanks to her prosthetic limb, she learned to ride a bike as a kid, loves to play softball and was on a swim team for years. But her number one passion is golf! Her care has helped her stay active at Pleasant Grove High School in Pleasant Grove, Utah, where she plays on the Varsity Golf Team, lettering in varsity golf as a freshman! Her passion began early at age 5 when she started supporting annual golf tournaments to benefit the hospital. She’s also been involved in a number of hospital-related extracurricular activities such as the Un-limb-ited Camp where she learned how to 3-track ski and river raft. She has also been a patient ambassador representing the hospital at fundraisers, by public speaking at events and helping to share her story on the radio!
Her family, including her mom Robyn, older sister Taylor, younger sister Abbie, and very involved grandparents, including Grandpa Porray, provide an amazing support network. Maleah's father, Scott, who recently passed away, is still a big influence in her life even though he’s no longer physically present. Maleah loves Shriners Hospitals for Children because “Shriners Hospital gives me the tools to pursue my dreams.”

“The purpose of the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open is to not only bring PGA TOUR golf to Las Vegas, but more importantly, to bring awareness to the great work of Shriners Hospitals for Children and the work those hospitals do to help transform the lives of children with orthopaedic conditions, burns, cleft lip and palate and spinal cord injuries,” said Adam Sperling, executive director of the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open. “We thought that bringing more of the hospital’s patients to the tournament and giving them an opportunity to experience some of the best golfers in the world would be a great way to increase the involvement of the hospitals and the patients in this event.”
