Frederic R. Bushnell, M.D., MBA

Frederic (Rick) R. Bushnell, M.D., MBA, is a pediatric anesthesiologist at Shriners for Children Medical Center in Pasadena.

After a successful 17-year business career and MBA degree, Dr. Bushnell decided he needed a change. He applied and established himself at the University of Illinois College Of Medicine at age 42. After graduating from medical school, completing a residency from Loma Linda and serving in surgical missions overseas, he felt fulfilled. He continues to assist in medical and surgical missions abroad. As a result of his missions, he has adopted six children from Tanzania, one of which is now in his fourth year of medical school.

Dr. Bushnell is board certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology and serves on several national Shriners Hospitals for Children medical advisory committees. He also serves as a member of the physician executive team and is chair of the anesthesia executive council for Shriners Hospitals for Children in Tampa, Florida. Dr. Bushnell helped develop a new model of N+1 anesthesia care. With help from his medical team and peers, he created an opioid-sparing preemptive acute pediatric pain management protocol upon which he conducts outcomes research. Dr. Bushnell has lectured extensively on pediatric acute perioperative pain management abroad to increase awareness of opioid risk and addiction. Dr. Bushnell's medical protocols have spared the exposure of children to thousands of doses of opioids, and he continues an active operating room and clinic practice.

Dr. Bushnell is the clinical anesthesiologist at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Arusha, Tanzania, and is a member of the Research Committee, Enhanced Recovery After Surgery Society.
