This year’s visiting professor at the 28th Annual G. Wilbur Westin Lectureship Academic Day, held at Shriners for Children Medical Center, was Raymond W. Liu, M.D., interim division chief of pediatric orthopaedics and chair of orthopaedic research at Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio. Our Chief of Staff Robert H. Cho, M.D., began the conference with an introduction, and Dr. Liu started soon after with his presentation entitled Skeletal Maturity Markers.

Cynthia Nguyen, M.D., Selina Poon, M.D., Carlos Uquillas, M.D., orthopaedic surgeons at Shriners for Children Medical Center, and De-An Zhang, M.D., anesthesiologist at Shriners for Children Medical Center, all had a full day as well, with research presentations entitled Microdose Protocol, Perioperative Analgesic Pharmacology and Platelet Rich Placebo.

The purpose of the G. Wilbur Westin Academic Day is to invite a world-renowned visiting professor to discuss state-of-the-art techniques and advances in orthopaedic surgery. Dr. Liu discussed the latest research and technologies for hip surgery, limb lengthening surgery and measurement of growth in children. The conference was open to all staff of the medical center, including surgeons, nurses, therapists and medical assistants. The lectureship academic day is an educational workshop for all clinical staff that helps enhance the care that our patients receive at Shriners for Children Medical Center in Pasadena, California.
