Shriners for Children Medical Center participates in an awareness walk

2nd Annual Lollipop Theater Superhero Walk, Los Angeles, California

Shriners for Children Medical Center participates in an awareness walk

We were proud and honored to again participate in the 2018 2nd  Annual Lollipop Theater Superhero Walk. Lollipop Theater is one of our very supportive community partners. They provide our patients the experience of lining up at the theater when their favorite movie opens, getting a ticket, grabbing popcorn, and picking out a seat. The movie events that Lollipop hosts at the medical center give our patients (who don’t go or wouldn’t normally be able to go to the theater) the full movie theater experience.

Lollipop gets the season’s biggest blockbusters while they are still in the theater and delivers them to our patients and families at Shriners for Children Medical Center. They work with leading motion picture studios to bring the joy, magic and momentary escape of the movies to those who need it most. We find this extremely beneficial for our patients as it brings a "routine" experience to their day, which in turn increases their strength and hope.

To build awareness of their organization, Lollipop began holding Superhero Walks and this year decided to highlight one of our local patient ambassadors, Alyssa Mercado. Alyssa was severely burned in 2006. After receiving care at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Northern California, in Sacramento, she was referred to Shriners Hospitals for Children —  Los Angeles (now Shriners for Children Medical Center) for reconstructive surgery. Today, Alyssa is a dedicated student and a confident young woman who openly speaks about her experience, treatment and the love and gratitude she has for Shriners Hospitals for Children.

Lollipop Theater paired Alyssa with an award-winning designer who met personally with her to create a one-of-a-kind superhero costume. Alyssa showcased her costume and superhero persona, Captain Confidence, during the Superhero Walk. She was given the royal treatment and met actor Layla Hayes from Doc McStuffins and NBA champ Festus Ezeli. It was a great event and experience for our patients, volunteers and staff, and we hope to participate in many more events and continue growing our partnership.
