Sisters with similar spinal curves share treatment

Kyrah and Kayla both sought treatment for their 90 degree curves with Joshua Pahys, M.D.

Sisters Kayla and Kyrah share a lot of things, including a love of lacrosse and City View pizza. They also shared similar 90-degree spinal curves and sought treatment at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Philadelphia.

When Kayla, now 16, was diagnosed with scoliosis at 13, she began treatment close to home in Syracuse, New York. But mom, Melissa, was not happy with Kayla’s care. After researching her alternatives online, Melissa found Joshua Pahys, M.D., and Shriners Hospitals for Children — Philadelphia.

“From the moment you walk in the building, everyone could not have been nicer or more welcoming,” said Melissa. “Everyone was really friendly and made me feel really comfortable. It’s just an overall positive environment,” said Kyrah.

Kayla had her spinal fusion surgery at the Philadelphia Shriners Hospital in 2014. An avid lacrosse player, Kayla was worried that about being sidelined due to her recovery. But thanks to Dr. Pahys, she was back on the field at the beginning of her team’s season. “Only six weeks after her surgery, Kayla was sending me pictures of herself jumping into the lake and doing all these things! As a mom, it was a little scary but she bounced back so quickly.”

When Kyrah’s physical education teacher noticed an irregularity in her spine, Melissa knew exactly where to go. Kyrah, now 13, had her spinal fusion surgery at the hospital in 2016. “I was kind of the guinea pig for Kyrah,” said Kayla. Now, both sisters are enjoying their summer vacations, looking forward to a beach trip in August and even ski season in the winter.

With only three years separating the sisters, Kayla and Kyrah are fierce competitors on the lacrosse field. “Even though we don’t play against each other, there’s definitely a sense of competition between us, and I wouldn’t say it’s friendly,” joked Kayla.

But before they made their five-hour drive back home, both sisters could agree on one thing – stopping at City View on Broad Street for a gyro.
