Starlight Fun Center donation provides fun for patients

Shriners Hospitals for Children — Philadelphia recently received a donation from Starlight Children’s Foundation, in collaboration with Colgate-Palmolive and ShopRite®.

They provided two Starlight Fun Center mobile entertainment units to the hospital. Starlight Fun Centers are equipped with the latest gaming system that provides bedside entertainment and therapeutic play for pediatric patients. Nurses, physicians, child life specialists and parents have shared that the Fun Center is a remarkable tool aiding in the healing power of play to hospitalized children.

Video games have a universal appeal to kids of all ages. In an inpatient hospital setting there is an added benefit; the Fun Centers provide distraction and can be therapeutic.

“They are mobile and allow us to bring them to patient rooms who are on isolation or restricted to bed rest or even to an open play area for use by any member of the family. Patients and siblings alike enjoy playing games on this Starlight Fun Center,” said Mary Ann Roberto, child life specialist at the Philadelphia Shriners Hospital.

“Every child deserves to experience the happiness and fun of childhood, especially when they’re facing a serious illness,” said Adam Garone, CEO, Starlight Children’s Foundation. “Thanks to this generous gift from Colgate-Palmolive and ShopRite®, thousands of kids at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Philadelphia will now have the chance to enjoy their favorite video games, movies and TV shows on a Starlight Fun Center.”

The Fun Center came furnished with the Nintendo Wii U™ game system as well as a range of age-appropriate games. A customized sticker permanently affixed to the Fun Center, highlighting their generosity for years to come, recognizes the foundation’s generous donation.

On behalf of ShopRite® and Wakefern Food Corp.® we are thrilled to help brighten the day of the young people and their families at Shriners Hospital,” said Sandy Brown, director, Brown’s Super Stores.

Thanks again to the sponsorship from Colgate-Palmolive and ShopRite®, the latest edition of the Starlight Fun Center was donated to help brighten up a stay at the hospital.
