Transportation authority employee and family donate bikes to the Philadelphia Shriners Hospital

Bike donation brings patients holiday cheer

Transportation authority employee and family donate bikes to the Philadelphia Shriners Hospital

For the past eight years, Chris, an employee of our local public transportation company, Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA), and his family have partnered with SEPTA to donate 850 new or "good used" bicycles to the patients and families at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Philadelphia. What started as a short-term solution to finding a home for unclaimed bicycles left on SEPTA routes has turned into a philanthropic family effort to help give hundreds of bicycles to children during the Christmas holiday season.

The use of SEPTA facilities and their employee contributions account for about 70% of all the bicycles donated. Over the years, Chris has added his children and grandchildren to the process and hopes that this is something that they will continue to do when he retires. At this rate, they are on track to collect 1,000 bicycles by the summer of 2020.

The family was also recently awarded the Diversity in Action Award, along with Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell, for their ongoing work in the community. Each year the staff at the hospital looks forward to working with Chris to identify patients who can benefit from the generosity of the collection of bicycles.
