At the Philadelphia Shriners Hospital, people from all walks of life share their time and talents to enrich the lives of others. Whether working directly with patients or in an office setting, volunteers support Shriners Hospitals for Children in its mission to provide the highest quality of care to children with orthopaedic conditions and other complex surgical needs. There are several ways to volunteer.

Hospital volunteers

Hospital volunteers are an invaluable part of our philosophy of care. Every volunteer position is important and provides a genuine service to our hospital and patients. As a volunteer at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Philadelphia you will discover a wealth of benefits, including:

Volunteer placement is based on the needs of our hospital, the kind of work you wish to do and the times you are available. We work hard to match your interests and talents with the needs of the hospital so that you will have a meaningful volunteer experience.

Here are the requirements for becoming a volunteer:

  • You must be at least 18 years old
  • You must commit to a minimum of two hours per week for three months
  • You must submit to a complete background check, including references, criminal records and child abuse history
  • You must have up-to-date vaccinations, including tuberculosis and other infectious diseases
  • You must take and pass a drug test
  • You must attend a comprehensive orientation prior to beginning your volunteer position

If an appropriate volunteer position is available, you will be contacted for an interview and hospital tour. If no appropriate openings are available when your application is received, we will keep your application on file for three months.

Group volunteers

Many schools, sports organizations and companies select Shriners Hospitals for Children to donate their time to or fulfill community service requirements. These groups usually volunteer for a couple of hours on one, pre-planned day. Each group must pick an activity that fits the size, interest, talents or goals of the group. Previous groups have performed music, skill demonstrations, interactive game stations, seasonal decorating and arts and crafts activities.

Groups unable to physically come to the hospital often choose to complete a service learning project or organize their own fundraiser/special event that positively benefits the hospital. Previous ideas have included car washes, bake sales, book drives and movie drives in honor of Shriners Hospitals for Children — Philadelphia.

Special performances

Sometimes volunteers donate their time by putting on short performances for our patients and their families at the hospital. We have hosted everything from marching bands to dancers, puppet shows, and choirs. Musical and performance entertainment brings a unique and fun component to our facility.
