Kechi with four children and one adultBurn survivor and former Shriners Hospitals for Children patient Kechi Okwuchi soared to the finals of television’s America’s Got Talent in 2017 and captured millions of hearts along the way. On Friday, August 3, she performed at the Northern California Shriners Hospital, where she inspired patients, families, staff and volunteers to follow their dreams.

Dulce Contreras, a burn survivor and employee at the Northern California Shriners Hospital, said meeting Kechi was a special experience for her entire family. "I think she's awesome. I think what she is doing is amazing and I hope this inspires other burn survivors to never give up on their dreams,” said Dulce. “We might look different from the outside, but we still are the same person from the inside. We are very lucky to be here and to be able to pursue our goals," she added.

Dulce said she was first "introduced" to Kechi by her 6-year-old daughter, who loved watching Kechi on America's Got Talent and told her mom, "She is a burn survivor like you and she is famous."

Kechi is one of two survivors of a 2005 plane crash that took the lives of 107 passengers. She suffered massive burns in the crash and had more than 100 surgeries at Shriners Hospitals for Children. Music therapy also was a big part of her recovery process, and her first-ever singing performance was on the stage at the Galveston Shriners Hospital, where she performed for patients, staff and families. Kechi appeared on NBC’s TODAY show and told correspondent Jenna Bush Hager that the care she received at Shriners Hospitals for Children gave her independence and confidence.

Kechi’s performance at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Northern California was reported in The Sacramento Bee and on KCRA-TV Channel 3.
