Maverick McNealy visits kids at Shriners Hospital

Maverick McNealy practiced his putting with kids at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Northern California before heading to Las Vegas to play in his second tournament on the PGA TOUR.  A Stanford graduate, McNealy led the Cardinals to the 2017 NCAA Championship and was the number two ranked amateur golfer in the world before turning professional.

McNealy made his professional debut at the Safeway Open played October 2–8 at the Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa. On Monday, October 9, McNealy discovered what a difference a golf tournament can make.

“Coming off of my first professional PGA TOUR event, it was both grounding and inspiring to visit Shriners Hospitals for Children — Northern California. Learning about the areas of specialty care provided was eye opening, but what will stick with me the longest are the amazing patients that I got to meet and the smiles on their faces the first time they held a golf club.”

A hospital tour introduced McNealy to the comprehensive and complex care that is the hallmark of Shriners Hospitals. He visited California’s only hospital-based EOS 3D diagnostic imaging center and leaned how the hospital uses computer-assisted design to fabricate high-performance prostheses that meet the individual needs of each patient. McNealy also visited the motion analysis center, where laboratory tests are used to optimize outcomes for children with cerebral palsy, spina bifida, limb differences, brachial plexus birth palsy and other disorders that affect mobility.

McNealy’s final stop on the hospital tour was the central play area where patients anxious to practice putting with the pro, greeted the golfer with loud applause.  Mitchell and Spencer Cady, Northern California patient ambassadors for the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, were among the field of golfers. McNealy presented each of the “miniature” golfers with an autographed golf ball.

Scheduled for October 31 – November 6, the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open is organized to support the mission of Shriners Hospitals for Children. When McNealy tees off at the Summerlin course in Las Vegas, kids from Shriners Hospitals for Children — Northern California will be among his gallery of fans.
