Shriners Hospital team presents at international cerebral palsy and developmental medicine meeting

Shriners Hospitals for Children doctors played a leading role at an international meeting of cerebral palsy and developmental medicine specialists held in Anaheim, California, September 18-21.

More than 1,500 doctors and scientists from North America, South America, Europe, Asia and the Pacific Rim participated in the 73rd Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine (AACPDM) held in conjunction with the 2nd Triannual Meeting of the International Alliance of Academies of Childhood Disability (IAACD). It was the first joint meeting of the AACPDM and IAACD.

Knowledge Without Borders themed the conference in which specialists from around the globe shared their clinical experience and scientific research on ways to improve function in children with developmental disabilities. Representing Shriners Hospitals for Children — Northern California were Jon Davids, M.D., assistant chief of orthopaedics, Vedant Kulkarni, M.D., orthopaedic surgeon, and physical medicine and rehabilitation specialists Loren Davidson, M.D., and Shawna Arsenault, M.D. Nurse practitioner Heather Rojas and physical therapist Lisa Wiedeman also participated in the conference. All are members of the multi-disciplinary team working through the Center of Excellence in Cerebral Palsy at the Northern California Shriners Hospital.

Cerebral palsy (CP) is the most common cause of motor disability in children in North America and worldwide. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about one in every 300 children is identified with CP. The Center for Excellence in Cerebral Palsy actively engages in clinical research to improve outcomes for these children.

“At Shriners Hospital our work focuses on creating individualized treatment plans designed to optimize function, activity and participation,” said Dr. Davids. “Patient/parent goals are integrated into clinical decision making that considers the best available evidence to optimize outcomes. All of this happens within the framework of the Shriners Hospitals for Children three-part mission to provide excellent care to children, perform clinical and scientific research, and train tomorrow’s health care providers,” he added.

Dr. Davids was invited to give two lectures, including the Presidential Guest Lectureship. He spoke to the international gathering of specialists on two topics:

  • Rationale and Evolution of the Application of Quantitative Gait Analysis to the Management of Gait Disorders in Children with Cerebral Palsy
  • International Perspectives on Hip Surveillance in Children with Cerebral Palsy

In addition to Dr. Davids’ invitational lectures, the Northern California team presented four instructional courses and six scientific posters. Presentations, course materials and posters are accessible online.

The AACPDM Annual Meeting provides high-quality dissemination of information in the basic sciences; prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and technical advances as applied to persons with cerebral palsy; and
other childhood-onset disabilities. The purpose and mission of IAACD are to improve the health and well-being of children, youth and adults with childhood-onset disabilities around the globe by enhancing local multidisciplinary professional capacity and expertise through an international collaboration between academies.
