Shriners Hospitals for Children — Northern California 2020 Virtual Walk For LOVE raises over $22 thousand

Shriners Hospitals for Children — Northern California 2020 Virtual Walk For LOVE raises over $22 thousand

The fourth annual Shriners Hospitals for Children — Northern California Walk for LOVE™ was a huge success! This year’s virtual event was a modified, physically distanced format to help reduce the spread of COVID-19. Between June 13 and 20, 318 participants helped raise $22,589.23 for Shriners Hospitals for Children — Northern California.

By the end of Walk for LOVE, participants collectively took more than 12,611,860 steps and walked more than 5,692 miles – the equivalent of walking round trip from the beaches of San Francisco to Manhattan, New York. Participants walked in 15 different states across the U.S. Forty of this year’s participants have walked in three or more previous Walks for LOVE.

Traditionally, the Walk for LOVE & 5K is a morning 1.5-mile fun walk and 5K that begins and ends at the Shriners Hospitals for Children — Northern California campus. This year’s event, however, was a week-long virtual event where participants tracked their walking progress individually via a smartphone app or by entering one’s walking progress via computer. Participants could choose between three different distance options: 10.5 miles, 20 miles and 30 miles.

“The Walk for LOVE is one of our favorite events of the year,” said Shriners Hospitals for Children — Northern California Director of Development Alan Anderson. “It not only raises funds to make our work possible, it’s also a celebration of our Shriners, our work, our patients and our community of supporters. This year’s walk was a celebration of our work in a way different format, given the times.”

Congratulations to this year’s first-place finisher, Joel Lerman, M.D.! Dr. Lerman completed his 30-mile challenge during one epic hike on June 13.

Participants walked as individuals, and also in teams. Walking teams alone raised more than $20,000. Some special teams include:

  • Team Anesthesia
  • Ankh Court #92 Ambassador Unit
  • San Jose Assembly #5
  • Asiya Shriners
  • Emma’s Dream Team
  • MarcoBue Crew
  • Team Hank

“We thank everyone who participated in Walk for LOVE remotely this year,” said Mr. Anderson. “We miss you and hope to see you next year.”
