At Shriners Hospitals for Children — Northern California, individuals from all walks of life share their time and talents to enrich the lives of others. Whether working directly with patients or in an office setting, volunteers support Shriners Hospitals for Children in its mission to provide the highest quality of care to children with orthopaedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries, cleft lip, scars from any cause and other complex surgical needs. There are several ways to give of your time.

Hospital volunteers

Individuals 18 years of age and older may apply to become a hospital volunteer. The volunteer services department reviews all applications to match skills and availability with volunteer needs. Applicants are called for an interview when a potential match is found. When selected by a department, volunteers are required to provide a current TB test and vaccination records to show that they have been immunized against measles, rubella and chicken pox. The screening process also includes a background check and drug test.

The hospital volunteer experience begins with the application process. You may apply online or request an application by calling the volunteer services office at 916-453-2087.

Community participation

Patient entertainment: The Sacramento Ballet, the California Highway Patrol Academy, the Cal Aggie Football Team and local Debutantes are just a few of the many groups that enrich the environment of care through volunteerism. If your group is interested in a patient entertainment activity, please call the therapeutic recreation and child life department at 916-453-2232.

Special events: Service clubs, business volunteers and other organizations are invited to support Shriners Hospital by participating in special events and fundraising activities. To learn more, see our Fundraising events page. Volunteer needs and activities vary by event and include everything from hospital events to help with fundraisers. To learn about opportunities available, please contact volunteer services at 916-453-2087.

Atrium series: Amateurs and professionals alike are invited to fill the hospital with music and song as part of the atrium series. School choirs, jazz bands, piano players and others are invited to perform in the hospital lobby throughout the year. The music floats through the atrium to positively impact all patients, families, staff and visitors. To schedule a performance, call volunteer services at 916-453-2087.
