Hospital staff encouraged to spread joy

"Jar of Joy" award winners celebrated

Kristen Carroll, M.D., chief of staff at Shriners Hospitals for Children®— Salt Lake City, is on the lookout for staff members who live the hospital’s mission, in order to recognize them. She selects a nominee who has proven to go above and beyond for the kids we treat, from her Jar of Joy each week and rewards them.

“I’m lucky enough to be a front line person and get to see amazing little miracles happen every day,” said Dr. Carroll. “I started Jar of Joy to celebrate all the wonderful things we do for patients and each other so that everyone can share in that fulfilling feeling you get when you make somebody’s life better.”

In addition to Dr. Carroll always keeping her eyes peeled for acts of kindness, staff members are encouraged to nominate each other when they see someone demonstrating the hospital’s core values, including excellence, innovation, commitment, integrity, teamwork, stewardship and respect.

Below are some Jar of Joy winners who have been observed executing their day-to-day responsibilities with excellence:

  • Esme Tule, a staff member in the clubfoot clinic was recognized for her incredible knowledge of the families and their stories.
  • Graham Fedorak, M.D., orthopaedic surgeon made a house call to trim a patient’s cast.
  • Wade Johns, care manager followed up with a family at home to ensure the patient’s comfort.
  • Staff from the wheelchair and seating and Pediatric Orthotic and Prosthetic Services, LLC department collaborated so a patient from Arizona could get her wheelchair and braces done on the same day, before she went home.
