Maria Coggins receives Emerging Nurse Leader Award

Hospital nurse credited with raising the level of excellence

Maria Coggins receives Emerging Nurse Leader Award

Congratulations to Maria Coggins for receiving the Utah Organization of Nurse Leaders (UONL) Emerging Nurse Leader Award! Maria is a beloved and highly respected nurse leader in surgical services at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Salt Lake City.

Maria’s advocacy for patient care can be seen in her diligent staffing of the operating rooms (ORs), post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) and outpatient surgery pre-op and post-op services. She is able to recruit top performers to join the team and helps staff develop additional competencies to enhance care.

The surgeons and anesthesiologists consistently credit Maria for raising the level of excellence in establishing a highly functioning OR team, which provides exceptional care for the children we serve. Maria works quietly and calmly to advocate for patients and staff.

In 2015, Maria was accepted into the highly competitive American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE) Nurse Manager Fellowship Program. She did exceptionally well and applied the new knowledge to her daily work. This also provided her with a new network of colleagues around the country with varying experiences, which she still contacts for ideas when she is looking for help on a project. She is continuing her professional development at Weber State University in the Masters of Nursing program.

Maria has been a member of the local chapter of the Association of Operating Room Nurses (AORN) since 2008, serving on the Board of that organization since 2012, currently in the role of president. The organization represents and cultivates nursing leadership across the continuum, to improve health care throughout the country.

Congrats Maria. We are so proud of you!
