Research volunteers enhance the Shriners Hospitals for Children mission in Salt Lake City

In January 2017, Shriners Hospitals for Children initiated a new program to utilize hospital volunteers in research. Since that time, Shriners Hospitals for Children — Salt Lake City has worked with our volunteer coordinator to identify and train six research volunteers, including an existing volunteer and new volunteers who expressed a particular interest in research. Since 2017, these volunteers have worked with our research team to abstract and validate patient data collected for our ongoing early onset scoliosis (EOS) and cerebral palsy research studies. These conditions are particular skills of our medical specialists at the Salt Lake City Shriners Hospital, and deepening our understanding through research will only benefit our patient population.

The valuable labor provided by these volunteers has enabled the research department to achieve their research goals and advance our portfolio to include several new exciting projects. Additionally, the patient data they have collected has been analyzed as part of four of the abstracts we have submitted for publication and have contributed to a multi-site EOS collaboration with Shriners Hospitals for Children — Greenville.

No doubt it can be difficult to see the "big picture" when, as a volunteer,  you spend an hour reading through a 15-year-old surgical note looking for the “time of procedure,” but each data point our volunteers collect has the potential of improving the care that we provide to our patients. We appreciate their time, their commitment and the invaluable service they give to the research department at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Salt Lake City.
