Outpatient clinic services

Outpatient clinic services

Outpatient clinic services function as the hub of hospital activity, where initial assessments, follow-up appointments, specialty clinics and our telehealth program all take place.

To provide high-quality care, staff from many disciplines work together to care for our patients to ensure positive outcomes. Physicians, registered nurses, certified medical assistants, care managers, social workers, child life specialists, developmental pediatricians and neurologists work together to carefully evaluate a child’s condition, manage a child’s progress and develop a care plan that provides the best possible outcome.

Our specialty clinics take place in our outpatient clinic for such diagnoses as Cornelia de Lange syndrome, neuromuscular conditions, osteogenesis imperfecta, skeletal dysplasia and clubfoot. Besides general orthopaedic clinics, we have hand clinics, spine clinics and plastics clinics.

The outpatient clinic staff is also committed to providing care to patients beyond hospital walls through regularly scheduled outreach and telehealth clinics.

Fast Track Video Visits are available, and may be a really nice option for children needing their annual or biannual check in.

To schedule a virtual visit, call the hospital just like you would when setting up a regular appointment and indicate that you would like to schedule a virtual visit.

Please be aware, not all of the orthopaedic specialists at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Salt Lake City are licensed in states outside of Utah. If you live in a surrounding state, you may need to meet with a different specialist for your virtual visit. When you call to make your virtual appointment, you may ask at that time if your regular doctor is licensed in your state.

Once your virtual visit is scheduled, the hospital will send you a consent form to participate in a virtual visit. Once the completed form is received, you will be sent instructions on how to connect with the hospital using Skype.

Requirements for being able to participate in a virtual visit using Skype include:

  • A mobile device or computer with internet access, which has a microphone and a camera
  • Be an existing patient and not require an X-ray for this appointment

Similarly, our telehealth program provides patients with a means to access our skilled medical team – without traveling to Salt Lake City – through the use of technology. A telehealth mobile cart connects physicians at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Salt Lake City with partnering medical facilities. Telehealth sites are in Rock Springs, Wyoming; Idaho Falls, Idaho; and Juarez, Mexico. Primary telehealth goals are to increase patient access and decrease travel time, cost and missed school and work.

Outreach clinics are on hold during the COVID-19 pandemic travel ban. Our clinics will resume as soon as travel is deemed safe. These outreach clinics include locations in Denver, Colorado; Phoenix, Arizona; and El Paso, Texas. Outreach clinics provide the same excellent quality care as the Salt Lake City Shriners Hospital, only closer to your home. We bring a team of orthopaedists, nurses, and orthotics and prosthetics staff members to assess and evaluate your child’s orthopaedic needs. If it is determined that your child will need surgery, travel to Salt Lake City will be necessary, but the team can help you make all the arrangements while you are at the clinic. To find out when the next outreach clinic in your area will be or to schedule an appointment please call 801-536-3564 or 800-313-3745.
