Estate and trust settlement after death

Estate and trust settlement after death

When a donor who has made a gift to Shriners Hospitals for Children through their will, trust or other beneficiary designation (such as life insurance, individual retirement account, an annuity, bank or brokerage account, etc.) dies, the person responsible for distributing the bequest or gift (executor, trustee, attorney, etc.) should contact the legal department located at Shriners Hospitals for Children’s International Headquarters in Tampa, Florida. The estate and trust team includes two attorneys, paralegals and support staff and has the experience necessary to assist you in carrying out the wishes of our generous donors.

The legal department represents each of Shriners Hospitals for Children’s 22 facilities in connection with all estate and trust gifts. Please do not mail distributions or documents to your local Shriners Hospitals for Children or to one of the Shrine Centers located throughout the country. Communicating directly with the legal department will facilitate an efficient and timely response to your inquiry.

Shriners Hospitals for Children understands that this can be a difficult and painful time for family and friends of the deceased who are charged with administering the estate or trust. While we are extremely grateful to receive these gifts, we are required to obtain a copy of the complete Will or Trust instrument, inventories and/or accountings in order to comply with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and audit requirements which allow us to maintain our status as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Additionally, this information helps us ensure that we honor the deceased’s wishes and comply with any restrictions placed on his/her gift.

We will provide the proper tax identification number after reviewing the donor’s Will or Trust. The correct number is determined by which hospital is named in the instrument.
