Specialized pediatric medical care closer to home

Parents and guardians want the best care for their children, but traveling to access the specialized care they seek can be a challenge at times. Thankfully, there are other options because of pediatric telehealth (also known as telemedicine). Through the Shriners Hospitals for Children Telehealth Care Network, our health care system is able to impact and help improve the lives of even more children, both nationally and internationally. Many patients now have access to top specialists, closer to home.

Telehealth program mission and vision

  • Deliver an exceptional patient and family experience with the use of telehealth
  • Increase access to quality care for patients and families that Shriners Hospitals for Children serves around the world

Medical services and conditions eligible for telehealth visits

No medical condition treated by Shriners Hospitals for Children is excluded from the use of telehealth. In some cases, depending on the level of treatment needed, telehealth may not be appropriate for your child. Surgical or invasive procedures would not be considered for telehealth, for example. Your child’s health care team will determine the circumstances under which telehealth may be appropriate for your child.

How does a telehealth appointment work?

Many Shriners Hospitals for Children locations have relationships with multiple health care entities (our telehealth affiliates) inside and outside of the United States that allow Shriners Hospitals for Children to conduct telehealth “clinics.” Under these arrangements, patients arrive at an appointment at an affiliate location and are seen by their Shriners Hospitals for Children medical team from a private telehealth room with the use of real time audio and video equipment.

Trained and certified health care professionals are on site at telehealth affiliate locations to assist during the telehealth visit.

Telehealth exam

The clinic site where the telehealth appointment takes place is generally a doctor's office or clinic within your home area.

When you arrive at the clinic for your child's telehealth appointment, please check in at the front desk where you will be registered. When it is time for the appointment, a medical professional will measure your child's height and weight, and escort you to a private exam room.

During the exam, you and your child will be communicating with the Shriners Hospitals for Children physician or medical team in real time, through a large computer screen with an attached camera. When the exam is complete, you will have an opportunity to speak with the medical assistant or nurse at the exam location to ensure that all of your questions have been answered and concerns addressed.

You will receive a visit summary that includes follow-up information about your next appointment.

Who may qualify for telehealth services?

Many Shriners Hospitals for Children patients may benefit from telehealth during multiple stages of their care.

If you and your child's Shriners Hospitals for Children health care provider agree that a telehealth visit will be beneficial, a telehealth appointment will be scheduled at one of our telehealth clinic sites following the usual appointment process. You will receive detailed information prior to the appointment date.
