2020 MLB Draft: Shriners College Classic

MLB drafted players

MLB officials decided to cut the 2020 MLB draft from 40 rounds to five due to circumstances related to the COVID-19 pandemic. There were 22 former Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic participants selected in this year’s MLB Draft including seven first round picks.

“We were proud to hear the names of 22 former tournament participants called in the 2020 MLB Draft,” said Dustin Johnson, sports marketing manager for Shriners Hospitals for Children. “As these players begin professional careers, many of them remember their experiences visiting Shriners Hospitals for Children locations or hosting patient families at their campus. The tournament connects student-athletes to our charitable mission, which they continue to support as professional athletes.”

Former Shriners Hospitals for Children patient Levi Prater was drafted to the St. Louis Cardinals in the third round. To read an article about his story, click here.

In this year’s tournament, fourth-round draft pick Dane Acker from Oklahoma threw the first no-hitter in Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic history. It was also the first time LSU has been no-hit in a 9.0-inning game in their program’s history.

Overall, the Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic has hosted over 30 programs in its 20-year history and has seen a multitude of future Major Leaguers participate, including All-Stars Gerrit Cole and Trevor Bauer (UCLA in 2009), David Price (Vanderbilt in 2007), Matt Carpenter (TCU in 2006) , Anthony Rendon (Rice from 2009–11) and Alex Bregman (LSU 2015) to name a few.
