Dr. Michelle Welborn wins Top Doctors honor

This January, Michelle Welborn, M.D., was honored as a Top Doctor by Portland Monthly magazine! Dr. Welborn has been providing care for patients with spinal conditions and deformities at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Portland for three years, and in that time she has performed over 250 surgical procedures.

Each year, staff members from Portland Monthly poll doctors, physician assistants and nurses in Portland to determine the best doctors in the area based on their accomplishments, education, patient satisfaction surveys and other criteria.

Overall, 587 doctors were awarded a spot on the list of Top Doctors, which represents the top five percent of doctors across 80 medical specialties. Of the 587 doctors who won, only five are in the field of specialized pediatric orthopaedics, and Dr. Welborn is one of them! According to their peers, the doctors on the list are the best you’ll find in their respective fields.

“Being recognized as a Top Doc is such a huge honor,” said Dr. Welborn. “But it’s not just about me. The care that we give is a huge endeavor – from care managers to nurses to physical therapists to anesthesiologists and more. I think this is a wonderful thing for the entire Portland Shriners Hospital staff, and it’s just an indication that our incredible teamwork is paying off.” Dr. Welborn attributes patient success at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Portland to the comprehensive care offered under the hospital’s roof. “From start to finish, there’s somebody there to help patients and their families through the care they’re receiving.”

Because scoliosis is more prevalent in girls than in boys, Dr. Welborn’s patients largely consist of teenage girls. “A lot of patients that I see are pre-teen and teenage girls, and I think that they’re comfortable talking to me about body image issues. They may not feel comfortable talking about those things with anyone else, and then when I come in and I’ve very open about it, it makes them feel that they can be open, too.”

“Top Docs is something that’s voted on by your peers, so it’s exciting to know that we’re getting the Portland Shriners Hospital name out there. I think that’s really important,” said Dr. Welborn. “We have an exceptional group of physicians here and I am deeply honored and humbled by the fact that people voted for me!
