Shriners Hospitals for Children hosts Community Day celebration on October 21

Shriners Hospitals for Children — Northern California turned 20 this year, and the public is invited to join in celebrating this very special milestone. Where Care is a Community Affair themes the anniversary celebration scheduled from 11 a.m. – 2:30 p.m., Saturday, October 21, on the grounds of the Northern California Shriners Hospital located in Sacramento at 2425 Stockton Boulevard.  Free parking is available for all guests.

The family-friendly Community Day celebration marks 20 years of extraordinary care. The event is filled with fun, food, entertainment and education.  Activities will include:

  • SunShrine hospital tours:  In this special exhibit, children are invited to tour the SunShrine Hospital where they will get finger casts, dress in surgical gowns, paint with syringes, meet Pet Therapy animals and much more.
  • Wheelchair sports: Access Leisure and Paralympic Sports Sacramento will coordinate wheelchair softball, tennis and basketball games. Counted among those participating in the games are patients and former patients of the Northern California Shriners Hospital.
  • Community exhibits: Local firefighters, the California Highway Patrol, the Bohart Museum of Entomology, the Firefighters Burn Institute, the California State Parks, and the Sacramento Philharmonic are among the community organizations sharing activities and information.
  • Games and entertainment: Galena Street East, the Ponderosa High School Choir, and the Ben Ali Shrine Band are just three of the groups scheduled to perform live on the stage throughout the day.  Fezzy, the Shriners Hospital mascot, will be joined by Sparky, Chipper and mascots from other community organizations. Star Wars characters, Spiderman and other superheroes will pose for pictues and bring smiles to kids of all ages.

Former patients will share stories about the positive impact Shriners Hospital care brought to their lives at an alumni brunch that begins at 10 a.m. Former employees of Shriners Hospital also are invited to the event. Rob Stewart, host of KVIE’s Rob on the Road will emcee the alumni celebration.

The Northern California Shriners Hospital opened its doors to children in April 1997. Since then more than 70,000 children have been accepted for care and the hospital has expanded its programs to meet the specialized needs of children. Treatment specialties include pediatric orthopaedics, burns, spinal cord injury, plastic surgery and pediatric surgery. The hospital also is home to a collaborative scientific research program known as the Institute of Pediatric Regenerative Medicine (IPRM). Any child under 18 is eligible for care provided the child’s condition is within the scope of services offered.  All care is provided regardless of a family’s ability to pay.
