A life full of possibility after a fractured vertebra

Ashyln Oswald is no stranger to the world of sports. A nationally competitive gymnast, 16-year-old Ashlyn spent over a decade pursuing her sport, earning state and regional titles. By age 13, colleges across the country were scouting Ashlyn for scholarships. Her future in gymnastics seemed all but assured when a major injury put her career and health into question.

While performing a tumbling pass during a competition, Ashlyn suffered a fractured vertebra. Though initially considered a temporary setback, over time her condition deteriorated to the point where even sitting for any extended amount of time became unbearable.

After months spent searching for medical care that would address her debilitating condition, Ashlyn and her parents, Drs. Michael and Laila Oswald, found Shriners Hospitals for Children — Shreveport. There, physicians had the expertise to identify the source of her pain and recommended surgery to relieve pressure on her spinal cord. Under the care of spine surgeon Anthony Sin, M.D., her pain was completely alleviated.

Free from the limitations of her condition, Ashlyn now has a bright future full of possibilities. Recently relocating from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to her native North Carolina, Ashlyn has found a new passion for acting, and has already performed in several projects and commercials. As she embarks on this new chapter in her life, Ashlyn credits the Shreveport Shriners Hospital team for helping restore her health and hope.

“I have unlimited open doors at my fingertips,” Ashlyn said. “Knowing that there are people like those who worked with me at Shriners Hospital, who are so willing to help young people live a full, rich life makes me realize that no one should ever feel helpless. I have Shriners Hospitals for Children to thank for that.”
