Fast Track Video Visit rehabilitation therapy

Fast Track Video Visit rehabilitation therapy

The Spokane Shriners Hospital is bringing rehabilitation therapy tools to the homes of patients. Spokane Shriners Hospital patients will experience a new type of therapy session: Fast Track Video Visits (FTVV). The FTVV program provides specialized pediatric therapy to established patients from the comfort of their own homes, while decreasing potential risk of exposure to COVID-19.

“It is important that our families know that even though we may not be able to see them in person, we can be virtually there with them,” said rehabilitation manager Katy Phillips.

Prior to a FTVV, patients will be mailed materials to be used during the session to help keep them engaged throughout their visit. The patient and therapist have the same materials and work through the project together.

“It is very beneficial to have the parent involved in the therapy session,” said Phillips. “We are able to instruct the parent on how to help their child complete the task. The parents can then help the child practice at home.”

In addition to FTVV, the Spokane Shriners Hospital rehabilitation staff members are also utilizing an online-based therapy tool called Medbridge, an educational platform with thousands of exercises and patient education tools. The hospital rehabilitation department therapists evaluate patients’ individual needs and create care plans in collaboration with their pediatric orthopaedic medical provider and family. Plans are customized and the patient is sent login information to access the platform.

“Exercises will vary for each patient. We are including content for occupational therapy, physical therapy and speech therapy to ensure patients are receiving the care they need,” said Phillips. “If we can’t see a child in person, then we will continue exploring digital avenues to deliver care.”

Safety is our top priority. The Spokane Shriners Hospital staff is actively following recommendations from local and state health departments and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to protect our patients, their families and our staff. That’s why patients and visitors will see changes, such as virtual therapy sessions, in order to ensure their protection.
