March is the month to celebrate child life specialists

Child life specialists are clinically trained in the developmental impact of illness and injury and assist families and patients during the overall experience during their hospital stay.

The Spokane Shriners Hospital is home to a team of child life specialists who work alongside a recreation therapy team. Recreational therapists and child life specialists help children manage stress, heal faster and reduce the need for sedatives and pain medication by helping children prepare for and cope with pain. The focus of recreational therapy is not necessarily the activity, but the goal behind the activity. For example, if a child who is having pain does not want to get in a wheelchair, the child is encouraged to come to the recreation room to play card games. The goal is not the game, it is to get the patient up and mobilized.

“We are lucky to have such an extraordinary team of child life specialists on our staff. They truly care for the patients and ensure that they have the best possible care during their time at our hospital. We celebrate them this month and thank them for their amazing service,” said Hospital Administrator Peter Brewer.

Child life services and recreational therapy are two exceptional examples of Shriners Hospitals for Children's approach to care. Even overlooked details such as iPads, Xboxes and pre-surgery hospital tours are important components to the Shriners Hospital experience. All staff members, from the recreational therapists to the chief of staff, are pediatric-trained and committed to a kid-friendly atmosphere. A short visit will make it clear that you aren’t just at a hospital, you’re at Shriners Hospitals for Children.
